Almost Famous

Today was the perfect day for a movie. It was Andrew's day off, raining, and we had some burger king. This is obviously one of my movies.Andrew never ever wanted to watch this movie. Mainly because people in high school acted like this was the peak of movies and it became a very hipster thing to like, all because of the scene where they sing Tiny Dancer on their bus. While we were watching I tried to gauge what he thought of this movie, and I don't think he really liked it. However, I still really like this movie. One reason is because it has an all star cast. Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Francis McDormand, Anna Paquin, Kate Hudson, Billy Crudup, Jason Lee, Rainn Wilson, Zooey Deschannel, Jimmy Fallon, and that kid from Sky High.

Our main character is William, who is a genius and super ahead of his grade level. He is suppose to graduate high school when he is fifteen. His mom is really crazy and anti everything. Due to her stubborn beliefs, her daughter rebels and goes off into the real world once she has turned 18. One of the funniest moments is when little William learns that the reason he looks so much younger than all of his classmates is because he's 11, not 12 like he originally thought.  It seems in the years that pass, her mom kind of mellows out because she lets William go to a concert and listen to rock music, which is something she was against before. William goes to interview black sabbath, but ends up bonding with their opening act Stillwater. They consider him 'the enemy' but still really enjoy his company and want him to make them look cool. He also meets Penny lane who changes his life. Kate Hudson does a great job in her role, but isn't quite believable as a 16 year old in this movie. Then Rolling Stone Magazine gives William the opportunity to go one tour with Stillwater and write a piece about them. Well the entire movie ends up being a battle of whether William should tell the truth, even though it might not be that pretty, or stay loyal to his new 'friends' and write a puff piece. Along the way we see the true nature of William's idol, Russel-the guitarist. He ends up just being a butthead, but eventually learns a lesson at the end of what is really important. During a near death experience, the band mates let their secrets out which causes lots of drama. William then goes home and writes the truth of this band, and they are so mad about it that they lie and say that it's all false. So now William doesn't even get his article. Well eventually Russel makes everything right, and becomes the good guy again and William get's his cover and article. There is a love triangle throughout this movie. William loves Penny, but Penny loves Russel, and well Russel thinks he loves Penny. I also have to mention that I think Jason Lee should really be the lead singer of a band somewhere (even though he didn't really sing in this) . He can really pull off the Jesus look.

I think that this is a really great coming of age story. Not just for William, but for Penny and Russel as well. It gives you a glimpse of what the rock scene in the 70's was like. From a modern perspective of course. If you haven't seen it, I think you definitely should go rent it. Right now!
