3 Ninjas...Hiya!!

Well we just got done watching 3 Ninjas. It's always risky to go back and watch things that you thought were so awesome as a kid and realize that they are really lame. A couple years ago I tried to go back and watch power rangers since it was on Netflix, and I didn't make it through the first episode. So I was pretty worried about watching this. Would it shatter every cool thing I admired about this movie???? The answer is somewhat. I could reminisce about all the super cool things that are still really cool, but the cheesy bits of the movie were even cheesier. I'll just kind of go through a list of things that I wrote down as we watched this.

    3 Ninjas
  • . The grandpa has always creeped me out. Ever since I saw Tremors when I see him I can only see him with blood flowing from his nostrils. Also in this movie, his eyes are extremely swollen all the time, and its just weird.
  •  The music that plays anytime that the boys are being ninjas or just doing anything whimsical sounds almost exactly like the tune that plays in Zelda Ocarina of Time when Link is running around in Kokiri village.

  •  I think that George Lucas was super influenced by this movie. The mask that grandpa uses as his alarm bell/light looks a lot like  Darth Maul.
  • Just so its on record, the real/ninja names of the boys:
                 Samuel/Rocky
                 Jeffrey/ Colt
                Michael/ TumTum

  • The main villain Hugo Snyder. Let's talk about him for a little bit. I for some reason as a little kid could never separate him and the town Snyder, TX. I used to go there for some gymnastic meets and I always felt a little uneasy going into the town because of him. I thought he would be there or something I guess. He also had the worst one liners
  •  There was a moment when an FBI agent decided that while trying to arrest Snyder, it was appropriate for him to taunt him by going "Hee hee hee hee hee". He then gets beat up. I turned to Andrew and asked him why on earth would he do this. His reply, "it's an old movie." So true.
  •  I always wished that I could serve dinner like a ninja like they did. Just Frisbee some plates, and then elegantly toss some food perfectly on to it from across the room. Sigh.
  •  The ninja goons that Snyder carries around in his back pocket are super funny looking. They were these huge bug looking safety glasses that just reminded me of the puddies from the Power Rangers.
  •  Alright, now lets take a moment and talk about the coolest things about this movie:
-the light up punch bag that they use to learn the weak spots of the human body
             - the boys' room. It had the coolest 90s patterns, 3 cool beds, a trampoline, and the awesome telephone can that they use to talk to Emily.
-red light bulb that alerted them to someone coming near the door
             - there is an epic bike ride to school that was just the bees knees
             - The basketball game that wins Emily her bike back. Apparently by Rocky being a Ninja, that means that he can fly and dunk during basketball. As a kid this was epic and totally believable.
            - The entire fight scene as they are defending their home: colt's camoflauge, rocky almost killing a guy with ties, the instant diarrhea and pepper bombs, and soap on the floor.
            - the Pizza stuck to the babysitters face, for some reason this always looks really delicious.
  • When the boys are returning to the Big City, they are singing the only version of On Top of Ole Smokey that I ever learned. It goes like this:
     On top of ole smokey
     All covered with bloood
     I shot my poor teacher
     With a 44 slug.
You know the rest.

  • There was a moment were Colt makes a big deal about telling his dad that his new name is Colt. Andrew repeats this effort emphatically and then makes a crazy horse whinny.

  • The California criminals are the most ridiculous characters in this thing. They are such huge cliches and yet I always think of them as being one of the greatest parts of this movie.

  • Ok. This is one of the most important, if not the only thing that this movie is remembered for.  Rocky Loves Emily. I still to this day will bust out chanting this just like they do in the movie. This is so beloved by 3 Ninja fans that there is even a band named Rocky Loves Emily.

  •  Another huge part of this movie. Especially watching it as a little girl. Team Rocky or Team Colt?

Colt was the wild spirit, yet Rocky was the stable one that was always there to save the day (see what I did there?) What did you think ladies? Which team were you on? FUN FACT: They ended up filming the 3rd 3 Ninjas after this, but released it after the 2nd, which has a different person playing Rocky and Tum Tum

  •  At one point, the ninja goons have these ridiculous machine guns, and I turn to Andrew and say "Whoa did you see those guns, their huge, their like a tier 17 gun!" I've been watching him play Black Ops a lot recently.
  •  This movie is not only about 3 kids kicking butt, but there are also deep moments as well. Just like in Harry Potter, the kids question if everything they knew about their beloved mentor is wrong, and that they are really playing on the dark side. (Don't worry, I will try and equate HP to every single movie we watch somehow. :)  )

Andrew's Closing Thoughts: " It's cheesier than I remember"

  1. Oh Brenna, you've certainly brought me back. 3 Ninjas had a very special place in the Lloyd household for some reason. -Kaitlin
